Orange County Commissioner Pete Clarke has endorsed Pete Crotty to succeed him through the Nov. 6 election for the District 3 seat.
Clarke is resigning the seat two years early because he ran unsuccessfully for Orange County Mayor, losing to Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings in the Aug. 28 election. In a letter released by Crotty’s campaign, he declares the choice for his successor is an easy one.
Crotty faces Mayra Uribe in the Nov. 6 election to fill the last two years of Clarke’s term. The two also competed in the Aug. 28 election, with Uribe finishing first and Crotty second in a six-candidate field. That sent them to a runoff.
“Pete’s priorities will embrace your quality of life issues entailing public safety, environmental concerns, transportation and growth issues,” Clarke says of Crotty in a statement released by Crotty’s campaign. “One quality that separates Pete from his opponent is his prior commitment to our community through volunteer activities before he contemplated running for office. This is a huge factor when considering who will represent you. He has shown his willingness to serve others without hesitation or reservation.”
That volunteer activity is close to Clarke’s own story. Crotty has worked for decades through organizations addressing substance abuse and criminal justice reform. Clarke came to the Orange County Commission after decades of work with a variety of non-profit organizations, particularly focusing on health and mental health issues. Emphasis on calling on non-profits and volunteers to address Orange County’s issues also been a calling card for Clarke’s tenure on the commission.
“For the past six years I have had the honor of representing you as your Orange County Commissioner. I have always placed you the citizen above all else when making decisions that affect your daily lives. Not all decisions were popular with some but as I said you not politics are my chief concern,” Clarke wrote. “You now face a choice between two candidates seeking to be your next commissioner. The choice, in my mind, is an easy one. Pete Crotty has received my endorsement, a decision made after considerable thought and consideration of the candidate’s qualities and foremost their dedication to you above others who will try to dictate their actions.”
