The Central Florida Tiger Bay Club will play host to a debate on guns between two sitting state senators who represent the Central Florida area.
Orlando Sen. Linda Stewart and Ocala Sen. Dennis Baxley will debate the topic at a March 27 meeting of the non-partisan political club.
The debate is scheduled to run from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the Country Club of Orlando, 1601 Country Club Drive. Doors open for registration at 11:30 a.m. and Tiger Bay Club members as well as non-members can RSVP online.
Both senators are currently in their first terms and previously served in the Florida House.
Before the Parkland school shooting Stewart, a Democrat, sponsored legislation to ban assault weapons and made a push for the bill in the closing days of the 2018 Legislative Session.
Baxley, a Republican, has been heralded as a “champion for 2nd Amendment rights” by the National Rifle Association, and was against provisions in the post-Parkland school safety package to ban bump stocks and raise the age of purchase for firearms to 21.
He was also the sponsor of the original “Stand Your Ground” law when he was a member of the Florida House.
Stewart represents Senate District 13, which includes part of Orange County, while Baxley represents Senate District 12, which includes parts of Lake and Marion counties as well as all of Sumter County.
