Disney Cruise Line plans to nearly double its fleet with three new ships by 2023.

In 2016, Disney announced the addition of two new ships with completion dates of 2021 and 2023. Last weekend, Disney revealed they are adding a third ship by 2022, which will bring the fleet to seven. All three ships will be built at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany.

“We decided two ships wouldn’t be enough to hold all of the exciting new experiences we have been dreaming up to take family cruise vacations to a whole new level with immersive Disney storytelling, world-class family entertainment, and imaginative innovations that are fantastically fun and uniquely Disney,” said Bob Chapek, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

The ship names and itineraries are still in development. All three cruiseliners will be powered by clean-burning liquefied natural gas. They will be approximately 135,000 gross tons with about 1,250 staterooms, which is slightly larger than their newest ships, the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.

The cruise line first set sail with the Disney Magic in 1998 and the Disney Wonder was added a year later.  The Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy joined the fleet in  2011 and 2012.
