Hurricane Matthew cancelled the Muslim-American fundraiser for House District 49 candidate Carlos Guillermo Smith scheduled to take place last week. Now, it’ll take place Tuesday, Oct. 18.
The event, called Muslim Americans for Carlos, will be held at the NeJame Law Office at the Premiere Trade Plaza Office Tower II, located at 189 S. Orange Ave., Suite 1800 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
“Carlos Guillermo Smith is a true leader with a record of standing up for all Floridians,” a press release reads. “He’s spent years building bridges between communities, fighting for the civil rights of minorities, and working to uproot hatred and bigotry. We need champions like Carlos, who are committed to eradicating all phobias — including xenophobia and Islamophobia.”
The event chair will be Mahmoud ElAwadi and the honorary host committee will be Congressman Keith Ellison, who was the first Muslim member of Congress and who currently serves as the co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
A quote from Ellison calls Smith the type of progressive champion Florida needs.
“His commitment to fairness and equality is something all voters can believe in,” Ellison said. “I’m proud to call Carlos my brother in the fight against bigotry and xenophobia.”
Smith is facing Shea Silverman, who lists no party affiliation, for the HD 49 seat.
