The nation’s largest solar power provider is offering rebates to Airbnb hosts to entice them to install solar panels in their homes.
SolarCity has teamed up with Airbnb, an online homestay network, to support Mayor Buddy Dyer’s Green Works Orlando initiative, which builds partnerships that foster positive environmental changes and energy conservation.
SolarCity is offering members of the Greater Orlando Airbnb community up to $1,000 cash back on all solar panel systems. New and current SolarCity customers who become Airbnb hosts will receive a $100 Airbnb travel credit.
“This exciting partnership between Airbnb and Solarcity builds on new opportunities and innovation,” said state Senator Jeff Brandes of St. Petersburg. “Floridians and our visitors both win when there are more options for renewable energy in our state.”
Central Florida has experienced a surge in home sharing growth. There are nearly 12,000 Airbnb listings in the region, which are eligible for the solar discounts. The top local markets are Kissimmee, Orlando, Davenport, Gainesville, Daytona Beach and Clermont.
Home sharing is a more environmentally sustainable way to travel, according to methodology developed by the Cleantech Group.
Airbnb estimates that travelers who chose Airbnb instead of hotels in 2015 reduced energy consumption equivalent to the amount used by 280,000 homes and water consumption by 4.2 billion liters, which would fill 1,700 Olympic size swimming pools.
