The Equality Florida Action PAC, the committee representing Florida’s largest LGBTQ rights organization, has endorsed Colonial High School Teacher Johanna López in her bid to represent District 2 on the Orange County School Board, her campaign announced Tuesday.
“Equality Florida Action PAC is proud to endorse Johanna Lopez for the Orange County School Board. LGBTQ youth are some of the most at risk for bullying, harassment and discrimination,” Joe Saunders, Equality Florida’s political director and former state representative, stated in a news release issued by López’s campaign.
“Johanna understands that our public schools are a place that all students should be welcomed as they are and free to be themselves. We need her leadership on the Orange County School Board,” Saunders continued.
Lopez faces fellow-teacher David Grimm in a runoff election on Nov. 6 after the two finished first and second in the Aug. 28 election featuring six candidates. The district covers part of south-central Orange County.
“I am honored to receive the endorsement of the Equality Florida Action PAC,” Lopez stated in the release. “I strongly believe every student, regardless of their sexual orientation and gender identity, deserves to have a shot at a successful future. This means we need to ensure that every student feels fully welcomed and supported inside and outside of the classroom. I look forward to championing all students, including out LGBTQ youth, on the Orange County School Board.”
